There’s nothing like the smell and appearance of a freshly cut lawn, yet no matter how much you trim and water the grass, you can’t seem to get it just right.
Follow these 5 lawn hacks to have your neighbors in envy of your fresh, lush lawn.
Just like the perfect haircut, length is the most important factor.
Set the height of your mower to the correct level depending on what season you’re in, weather conditions and most importantly, the type of grass you have.
If you have Sir Walter Buffalo Grass, you should mow it to 30-50mm while Nullarbor Couch Grass can be mown to 15-30mm.
This link has more guides on the correct height.
This is even more important in the summer months.
Hydrating your lawn is the difference between drought, desert-like conditions and fresh lush grass.
Experts recommend grown lawn be watered at least once per week for around 10 minutes, while new seeds should be treated to daily for around 5 to 10 minutes.
Remember to be conservative with water use though, and to stick to state laws.
If the steps above seemed obvious, then this is where you can take your lawn from alright to exceptional.
With every change in season, scatter a high-quality fertiliser with micronutrients like sulphur, copper and iron over it.
Applying fertiliser at a rate of 50 grams per square meter will do the trick.
The way your mower pulls grass from the ground depends on the sharpness of the blades. Thus, keeping your mower serviced and sharp can make all the difference.
Blunt blades tear grass rather than cut it, leaving an underwhelming effect.
Be sure to take your mower down to your local hardware store at least once a year to have its ends sharpened.
This will become slightly harder in winter, but is the golden rule without exception.
Always mow lawns in dry conditions. Mowing wet lawns will cause the grass to stress and fray, making a dry morning the ideal time to roll out the mower.
